    Impact of Increased Economic Burden Due to Human Echinococcosis in an Underdeveloped Rural Community of the People's Republic of China

    This paper compares medical expenditure for hospital treatment of echinococcosis in NHAR, western People's Republic of China, for different years, different regions and different socioeconomic groups. The results show that the level of household income strongly influences health care decisions. This study represents an effort to determine the effect of hospital charges for inpatient treatment of echinococcosis on the choice of provider in NHAR, and quantitatively examines this topic for the rural poor. The findings show that low income individuals from rural areas opted to visit a local county hospital rather than an urban hospital for hydatid surgery despite the inferior infrastructure, personnel and general health care facilities available. There are a number of policy implications. For example, enhancing the quality and service of county hospitals in rural areas will benefit those with lower incomes, thus improving access of rural residents to health facilities for higher quality diagnosis and efficient treatment. Thus, we advocate that government policy should be to increase investment in health care in poor rural areas, and to launch relevant medical aid projects to help those in poverty

    Effect of farnesyltransferase inhibitor R115777 on mitochondria of plasmodium falciparum

    The parasite Plasmodium falciparum causes severe malaria and is the most dangerous to humans. However, it exhibits resistance to their drugs. Farnesyltransferase has been identified in pathogenic protozoa of the genera Plasmodium and the target of farnesyltransferase includes Ras family. Therefore, the inhibition of farnesyltransferase has been suggested as a new strategy for the treatment of malaria. However, the exact functional mechanism of this agent is still unknown. In addition, the effect of farnesyltransferase inhibitor (FTIs) on mitochondrial level of malaria parasites is not fully understood. In this study, therefore, the effect of a FTI R115777 on the function of mitochondria of P. falciparum was investigated experimentally. As a result, FTI R115777 was found to suppress the infection rate of malaria parasites under in vitro condition. It also reduces the copy number of mtDNA-encoded cytochrome c oxidase III. In addition, the mitochondrial membrane potential (Delta psi m) and the green fluorescence intensity of MitoTracker were decreased by FTI R115777. Chloroquine and atovaquone were measured by the mtDNA copy number as mitochondrial non-specific or specific inhibitor, respectively. Chloroquine did not affect the copy number of mtDNA-encoded cytochrome c oxidase III, while atovaquone induced to change the mtDNA copy number. These results suggest that FTI R115777 has strong influence on the mitochondrial function of P. falciparum.     Inference of Allelopathy about Spartina Alterniflora to Scirpus Mariqueter by Effects of Activated Carbon on Soil

    AbstractSpartina alterniflora Loisel is an invasive species in Jiuduansha Islands and threatens the survival of native species Scirpus mariqueter. In this study, activated carbon (AC) was applied to study the allelochemicals remained in the soil. Seed germination and seedling growth bioassays were used to test the allelopathic effect, and GC-MS was used to identify the allelochemicals. Our results showed: due to the invasion of S. alterniflora, germination of S. mariqueter seeds and the growth of seedlings were significantly inhibited. When AC was added into S. mariqueter soil, the germination had not been affected while the seedling growth was promoted significantly. When AC was added into the soil of S. alterniflora, both the germination and the seedling growth had an obvious improvement. All indicated that S. alterniflora soil contained allelochemicals which would be absorbed by AC. The identified allelochemicals were hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid, dibutyl phthalate, (adipic acid, isohexyl methyl ester) and (adipic acid, di (oct-4-yl ester))

    Fractional Anisotropy in Corpus Callosum Is Associated with Facilitation of Motor Representation during Ipsilateral Hand Movements

    BACKGROUND: Coactivation of primary motor cortex ipsilateral to a unilateral movement (M1(ipsilateral)) has been observed, and the magnitude of activation is influenced by the contracting muscles. It has been suggested that the microstructural integrity of the callosal motor fibers (CMFs) connecting M1 regions may reflect the observed response. However, the association between the structural connectivity of CMFs and functional changes in M1(ipsilateral) remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between functional changes within M1(ipsilateral) during unilateral arm or leg movements and the microstructure of the CMFs connecting both homotopic representations (arm or leg). METHODS: Transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to assess changes in motor evoked potentials (MEP) in an arm muscle during unilateral movements compared to rest in fifteen healthy adults. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was then used to identify regions of M1 associated with either arm or leg movements. Diffusion-weighted imaging data was acquired to generate CMFs for arm and leg areas using the areas of activation from the functional imaging as seed masks. Individual values of regional fractional anisotropy (FA) of arm and leg CMFs was then calculated by examining the overlap between CMFs and a standard atlas of corpus callosum. RESULTS: The change in the MEP was significantly larger in the arm movement compared to the leg movement. Additionally, regression analysis revealed that FA in the arm CMFs was positively correlated with the change in MEP during arm movement, whereas a negative correlation was observed during the leg movement. However, there was no significant relationship between FA in the leg CMF and the change in MEP during the movements. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that individual differences in interhemispheric structural connectivity may be used to explain a homologous muscle-dominant effect within M1(ipsilateral) hand representation during unilateral movement with topographical specificity

    Natural Infection of the Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus spp.) with Echinococcus granulosus in China

    Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis are important zoonotic pathogens that cause serious disease in humans. E. granulosus can be transmitted through sylvatic cycles, involving wild carnivores and ungulates; or via domestic cycles, usually involving dogs and farm livestock. E. multilocularis is primarily maintained in a sylvatic life-cycle between foxes and rodents. As part of extensive investigations that we undertook to update available epidemiological data and to monitor the transmission patterns of both E. granulosus and E. mulilocularis in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (NHAR) in northwest China, we captured small mammals on the southern slopes of Yueliang Mountain, Xiji, an area co-endemic for human alveolar echinococcosis and cystic echinococcosis. Of 500 trapped small mammals (mainly ground squirrels; Spermophilus dauricus/alashanicus), macroscopic cyst-like lesions (size range 1–10 mm) were found on the liver surface of approximately 10% animals. One of the lesions was shown by DNA analysis to be caused by E. granulosus and by histology to contain viable protoscoleces. This is the first report of a natural infection of the ground squirrel with E. granulosus. We have no definitive proof of a cycle involving ground squirrels and dogs/foxes but it is evident that there is active E. granulosus transmission occurring in this area

    Memory and synaptic plasticity are impaired by dysregulated hippocampal O-GlcNAcylation

    O-GlcNAcylated proteins are abundant in the brain and are associated with neuronal functions and neurodegenerative diseases. Although several studies have reported the effects of aberrant regulation of O-GlcNAcylation on brain function, the roles of O-GlcNAcylation in synaptic function remain unclear. To understand the effect of aberrant O-GlcNAcylation on the brain, we used Oga+/- mice which have an increased level of O-GlcNAcylation, and found that Oga+/- mice exhibited impaired spatial learning and memory. Consistent with this result, Oga+/- mice showed a defect in hippocampal synaptic plasticity. Oga heterozygosity causes impairment of both long-term potentiation and long-term depression due to dysregulation of AMPA receptor phosphorylation. These results demonstrate a role for hyper-O-GlcNAcylation in learning and memory.ope

    Adaptive Evolutionary Clustering

    In many practical applications of clustering, the objects to be clustered evolve over time, and a clustering result is desired at each time step. In such applications, evolutionary clustering typically outperforms traditional static clustering by producing clustering results that reflect long-term trends while being robust to short-term variations. Several evolutionary clustering algorithms have recently been proposed, often by adding a temporal smoothness penalty to the cost function of a static clustering method. In this paper, we introduce a different approach to evolutionary clustering by accurately tracking the time-varying proximities between objects followed by static clustering. We present an evolutionary clustering framework that adaptively estimates the optimal smoothing parameter using shrinkage estimation, a statistical approach that improves a naive estimate using additional information. The proposed framework can be used to extend a variety of static clustering algorithms, including hierarchical, k-means, and spectral clustering, into evolutionary clustering algorithms.     The role of the School Librarians as Information Literacy Specialists: a comparative study between Hong Kong, Shanghai, South Korea, Taipei, and Japan

    Theme: The Educational Role of School Libraries in the M Generation主題 -- 學校圖書館在M世代的教育角色學校圖書館主任不僅是圖書館的管理人員,現今他們也擔負了教學、顧問、行政、資訊專家和資訊素養導師等角色;然而在亞洲國家,學校圖書館主任的這些角色與貢獻卻未被認定,其中尤以作為資訊素養專家的這個角色特別不受認可與重視。因此本研究的主要在分析比較學校圖書館主任作為資訊素養導師這個角色,在亞洲不同地區的情況與差異。本研究在香港、 日本、 上海、 韓國、及台北五個地區共收集了466 位學校圖書館主任的調查問卷。分析結果發現,圖書館主任在資訊素養方面擔當的範圍和參與度,台北和南韓方面的表現優於其他地區,尤其台北學校圖書館的人員編制和組織結構更傾向富裕和部門化。分析結果同時顯示學校圖書館主任進行資訊素養教育的數量,與他們和其他學科教師的協作,以及他們作為資訊顧問和對整體教學的貢獻成正比。此外學校圖書館主任提供參考服務的數量和程度以支援其他學科教師教學,是他們主要的貢獻。postprin
